Journalists cast as villains need to recall their heroes

The press is proud of its triumphs. But now, under attack as never before, it needs to hold itself to its own values of transparency and rigour too

New years mean new leaves mean new challenges. And if there is one compelling challenge for journalists and their rough trade in 2018, it lies in re-establishing some modest degree of public respectability: in short, a measure of trust. For without a doff of the cap as big news breaks, there is only a shrug of the shoulders – which really means nothing at all.

And shrugging, when you contemplate the media wasteland of 2017, has been the pervasive reaction. Trump tweets across fields of cultured, East Coast derision. In Politico’s view, he defines the press as his “prime adversary”, not a foreign power, or terrorism, or an energy crisis; “he has changed the way we view the press and the way the press views itself.”

Steve Smith century frustrates England as Australia save fourth Ashes Test

  • Match drawn after Australia’s captain hits unbeaten 102 on day five at MCG
  • England fail to capitalise on wickets of David Warner and Shaun Marsh

There was still no way past Steve Smith. The pitch may have been as docile as a lamb yet it still required wonderful concentration from Australia’s phenomenal captain to bat for almost seven hours to save the Melbourne Test match. In the process he recorded his 23rd Test century. Finding the key to removing Smith from the crease would have taxed the team at Bletchley Park, let alone the one led by Joe Root.

Here Smith played with his usual fidgeting calm, as resolute in saving the game as he was when winning those in Brisbane and Perth. He now revels in self-denial as well as shredding opposition attacks. At the crease he is vaguely reminiscent of Derek Randall, who played his greatest innings here 40 years ago (there has been some footage of the Centenary Test on our screens during the rain breaks). Like Randall there is much pre-delivery movement and a self-taught, idiosyncratic method – though Smith has proven to be a far more prolific and significant batsman. He has the confidence to do it his way.

Millennials set to reap huge rewards of inheritance boom

Thinktank: younger generation will profit from high value homes owned by baby boomer parents – but not till they are 60

An unprecedented inheritance boom is heading the way of today’s younger generation. But it will result in higher wealth inequality and will arrive too late for most people currently excluded from the property ladder, according to a leading thinktank.

The Resolution Foundation said inheritances would more than double over the next two decades. It expects the peak year to be 2035, as the baby boomer generation – who have benefited most from the huge increase in house prices – progress through old age.

Richard Branson's Virgin healthcare firm scoops £1bn of NHS contracts

Virgin Care’s success highlights fears over role of private companies in NHS and casts doubt on recent assurances by Jeremy Hunt

Richard Branson’s Virgin Care won a record £1bn of NHS contracts last year, as £3.1bn of health services were privatised despite a government pledge to reduce the proportion of care provided by private companies.

Overall, private firms scooped 267 – almost 70% – of the 386 clinical contracts that were put out to tender in England during 2016-17, according to a new report. They included the seven highest value contracts, worth £2.43bn between them, and 13 of the 20 most lucrative tenders.

Ireland’s Australian embassy got “threatening and abusive phone calls” over the government’s gift of a statue of Queen Victoria to the city of Sydney, Irish cabinet papers declassified after 30 years have revealed.

The statue, which had been in storage in Ireland for almost 40 years, was sent despite opposition from Ireland’s then finance minister, John Bruton, and the director of the National Museum of Ireland, John Teahan. It has stood outside Sydney’s Queen Victoria Building ever since.

Tim Dowling: my year in numbers does not add up to happy reading

0: number of minor children in my care as of May 2017. 3: male adults currently living with me anyway

By all accounts, 2017 has been a tumultuous year, not least for me. Faced with so many changes in such a short period of time, it’s all too easy to lose one’s bearings. That’s why, when it comes to taking stock in the dark days before the new year dawns, I find it helpful to restrict myself to cold, hard numbers. Below is my personal statistical index for 2017, using the latest obtainable figures:

Macron had a good year. In 2018, he could even stop Brexit | Natalie Nougayrède

The French president is uniquely placed to speak for Europe. If he reaches out to British people, perhaps the disaster of leaving the EU could be averted

This was the year France won and Britain lost. Emmanuel Macron emerged to transform a sclerotic political scene, dazzling the world and many in his country with a youthful energy that made French rejuvenation a buzzword. Theresa May stumbled from one hiccup to the next, rushing to Washington for an awkward meeting with Donald Trump, triggering article 50 with no plan for the aftermath, and losing her majority in parliament.

McMafia author Misha Glenny: ‘I don’t want to be moral. I want to show people the way the world works'

The former BBC foreign correspondent is thrilled at the TV adaptation of his book, but says the criminal interests he warned against have infiltrated London – and that Brexit raises the risk of further corruption

The BBC’s new flagship drama is already said to be 2018’s The Night Manager before the first episode has even aired. A chillingly sumptuous portrait of globalised crime, McMafia’s first episode will be broadcast on New Year’s Day, before being streamed worldwide on Amazon Prime. The eight-part series stars James Norton as an urbane, privately educated hedge fund manager who is trying to pursue a legitimate career free from his Russian gangster father’s criminal network – but becomes compromised when tentacles of violence stretch all the way from Moscow, drawing him in.

The author of the book upon which the show is based will be holding a party every week in honour of each episode. “Because,” as Misha Glenny says with a bemused smile, “this doesn’t happen very often, does it? For a nonfiction author of a nonfiction minor cult book to go to a big fictional TV series – well it’s just kind of dreamland.”

‘There will be an afterwards’: how a mother prepared her sons for her death

When Kate Gross was dying, aged 36, she told her sons there would be life after her death. But how would they actually cope with losing her?

When my grandson Isaac was very small, his mother, Kate, would say, “I’ll miss you” when she travelled away for work. Later, when he was three, I remember him running after her in the park when he couldn’t quite keep up with her, crying: “Don’t miss me, Mummy.” To him, “to miss” meant “to leave”. “Don’t miss me, Mummy”, meant don’t leave me.

But, in the end, Kate did have to leave him, and his twin brother, Oscar. When the boys were five and she was 36, she died. It was Christmas Day 2014, minutes before the boys woke up to ask their dad, Billy, if it was time to open their stockings.

My resolution for 2018 is to trace the family who don’t yet know I exist

Two years ago I discovered I was not related to my white father. Now, I intend to find out the origins of my blackness

When it comes to setting new year’s resolutions, I am not that bothered about losing weight, exercising more, or becoming more productive (although it would be good to finally get a grip on all those things). Instead, I have decided to make 2018 the year in which I make a serious, wholehearted attempt to trace a family who don’t yet know I exist, and to find out once and for all, in as much detail as I can, the origins of my blackness.

Letter to … my dad, whose heavy drinking is out of control

The letter you always wanted to write

I can’t remember a time before you drank. As children, we quickly learned to spot the signs. You would become progressively louder and more argumentative before taking offence at some perceived slight and losing your temper. I have no idea if you remember all the terrible things you have said and done while drunk. If you do, you have never apologised. The hurt and the sadness is for the rest of us to bear, while you carry on as if everything is fine.

It is harming your health. No one can drink as much as you do and be OK. But the first heart attack didn’t register, and neither did the next. Stress, you said. I need to relax. As soon as you got home from the hospital, you made yourself a drink. We let you. How do you stop a grown man drinking? We must have poured away gallons of whisky over the years, but you just buy more. Besides, you have made it clear: either we accept your alcoholism, or we lose you. If it ever comes down to it, you will always choose the bottle. It is what alcoholics do.

'Satire has had a busy year': how to laugh at the year that was

From Trump to Brexit, 2017 has been both a gift and a curse for comedians. Andy Zaltzman looks back

Launching tomorrow: from Trump’s missing tweets to Corbyn’s trophy cabinet, read the rest of our comedy special

Barely a year goes by these days without some kind of major news event occurring. Time was, not so long ago in the grand scheme of things, when nothing much would happen for a couple of centuries. Some historians (OK, Wikipedia) note that in the year 1317, there were only four events. It must have been a testing time to be a newsreader or topical panel show comedian; but was the planet happier, unencumbered by things that were happening, and people’s reactions to things that were happening, preoccupied as they were by humble pursuits such as avoiding death? Who knows.

Now, however, news never sleeps (which might explain why it has become so short-tempered and erratic). As the first year in history in which the most powerful person in the world has been an internet troll with access to a Twitter account, 2017 has been even more newsically unrelenting than its predecessor, role model and inspiration, 2016.

'Lost without her system operators': a year in the life of the Maybot

John Crace charts an extraordinary 12 months for Theresa May as part of our satirical look back at 2017

Read more from the satire special

“The Enemies of the People”, aka the supreme court, rule that parliament should have a vote on triggering article 50. Theresa May is outraged. She hadn’t taken back control only to give back control to the British parliament. The Conservatives then draw up a bill to go through the Commons that Jeremy Corbyn says his party will back. Theresa May is again outraged. How dare the Labour party attempt to thwart the will of the people by voting with the government?

Towards the end of January, Theresa spells out her vision for Brexit in her Lancaster House speech. Britain will be leaving the single market and the customs union, though very much hoping that the EU will give us all the benefits of both, without either having to pay a penny or being obliged to abide by any of its regulations. The EU is understandably bemused, but praises the prime minister for the clarity with which she described her confusion.

Arsène Wenger overhauls Ferguson but legacy may prove a millstone

As Frenchman prepares for 811th league game in charge to overhaul Sir Alex Ferguson it will sharpen focus on his legacy and who will eventually succeed him

Behold, the age of Arsène. The past few years of Arsène Wenger’s extended Arsenal farewell have brought something new, a gradual piling up of gongs and garlands that have little to do with trophies won or goals scored but speak instead to his extreme, unyielding longevity. Longest-serving Arsenal manager. Longest-serving manager in Europe. As Wenger ticks these marks off like some stately old slugger gamely rounding the bases, tipping his cap to the bleachers, there is a feeling of end times about this.

In July Wenger edged past Sir Alex Ferguson as the longest-serving manager in Premier League history, reeling in the Scot’s tally of 7,582 days. And now, five months on, he is back to finish the job. When Arsenal travel to West Bromwich Albion on New Year’s Eve Wenger will take charge of his 811th league game as the Arsenal manager, overhauling Ferguson again to take top spot on games managed and stand alone at the head of the field in the modern era.
